Your Recovery Key
When You See This Screen
This screen appears exactly once — immediately after you create your vault. It will never be shown again, so take action before leaving this screen.
What You See
- A key icon at the top
- The heading "Save Your Recovery Key"
- A warning: "This key will NOT be shown again"
- Your recovery key displayed in large monospace text (a series of letters and numbers separated by dashes, like
XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) - Two action buttons:
- Copy to Clipboard — copies the key so you can paste it somewhere
- Save to File — opens a file save dialog to save the key as a text file
- A "I've Saved My Recovery Key" checkbox
- A "Continue" button (becomes active after you copy or save the key)
What Is the Recovery Key?
The recovery key is your backup way to access your vault if you ever forget your master password. It lets you:
- Reset your master password
- Regain access to all your encrypted data
- Set up a new master password without losing anything
How to Save Your Recovery Key
You have two options — use both for maximum safety:
Option 1: Copy to Clipboard
- Tap "Copy to Clipboard"
- A message confirms the key is copied and tells you it will auto-clear from the clipboard in 30 seconds
- Paste the key somewhere safe (a physical printout, a different password manager, a secure note on another device)
Option 2: Save to File
- Tap "Save to File"
- A file save dialog opens with a default filename like
davianvault_recovery_key_20260214_103000.txt - Choose where to save the file
- The saved file includes your recovery key and a security warning
Continuing to the App
- After saving your key (via copy or file), confirm you've saved it
- Tap "Continue"
- You're taken to the main app — the Dashboard
Important Warnings
- This screen is shown only once. If you skip it or forget to save the key, you cannot retrieve it later.
- Store the key somewhere safe and separate from your device — a printed copy in a safe, a USB drive, or another secure location.
- Do not store it on the same device as your vault — if you lose the device, you lose both.
- If you save to a file, the file contains the key in plain text. Transfer it to secure storage and delete the file immediately after.
- Without both your master password and recovery key, your vault data cannot be recovered by anyone — not even the developers.
